(FAQs) Pages, Layout and Design:

The Answers:

How do I insert page numbers? [Back]

Page numbers can be only set in the CEWE PHOTOBOOKS.

The "Configure page numbers..." symbol can be found in the toolbar.

You can switch page numbers on or off for all inside pages by means of the checkmark in front of "Show page numbers".

General

You can choose from the following page number formats:

Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.)

lower-case Roman numbers (i, ii, iii, etc.)

upper-case Roman numbers (I, II, III, etc.)

Lower-case letters (a, b, c, etc.) and

upper-case letters (A, B, C, etc.).

The text for the page numbering is by default "%".

The percent signs act as placeholders for the page numbers and should not be removed. The rest of the text can be freely defined.

"Page %" results in "Page 1", "Page 2", "Page 3", etc.

"- % -" results in "- 1 -", "- 2 -", "- 3 -", etc.

and "PHOTOBOOK page %, Heike and Paul's wedding" results in "Photobook page 1, Heike and Paul's wedding", "Photobook page 2, Heike and Paul's wedding", etc.

The distance between the page number and the edge of the page can be set vertically and horizontally from 0 to 50 mm.

A "background colour" can also be set for the page number text field.

Arrangement

The following settings apply to the arrangement of the page numbering on the pages:

Text properties

The text formatting for the page numbering allows the usual definition of font, font size and font style (bold and italics), as well as the colour of the text.

You can also adjust the thickness and colour of the contours of the letters.

Text preview

The text preview shows you the effects of your settings.

How can I reduce the number of pages in my Photobook? [Back]

You can reduce the number of pages in your CEWE PHOTOBOOK by clicking the Pages function in the selection box at the bottom left.

You can now reduce or increase the number of pages in eight steps.

Please note that there is a minimum and maximum number of pages for each selected CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

How do I apply a page layout? [Back]

The CEWE PHOTOBOOK software offers a wide range of predefined page layouts. You can invoke and select these models under the "Layout" tab. (Selection based on number of photos per page)

Select the chosen layout (click left mouse button) and insert this layout in the CEWE PHOTOBOOK. You can use the function keys immediately below the layout selection.

To provide a clearer overview and to make it easier to maintain a consistent layout style in your CEWE PHOTOBOOK, the layouts are now divided into categories.

Under the layouts you have the following buttons available for the inside pages:

"Place layout on this double page" - inserts the selected layout on the two current pages

"Place layout on left page" - inserts the selected layout on the current left page

"Place layout on right page" - inserts the selected layout on the current right page

"Place layout on all inside pages" - inserts the selected layout on all inside pages of the photobook

"Place layout on all left inside pages" - inserts the selected layout on all left inside pages of the photobook

"Place layout on all right inside pages" - inserts the selected layout on all right inside pages of the photobook

"Delete own layout" - to remove any unwanted layouts you have produced yourself

How can I change a page layout? [Back]

You can insert another predefined layout by clicking the "Layout" tab in the object selection.

Or you can change the layout manually, by moving layout frames, changing their size, adding new layout frames or deleting existing ones.

Can I save my own layout? [Back]

Of course, you can save your own layouts in the software.

To do so, select a layout frame on the page whose layout you want to save and, in the object toolbar, click the "save layout" function in the layout tools area.

This layout is now saved directly in the Layouts main category.

It also receives a green star. That enables you to recognise your own layouts faster.

These can also be found, however, in the "My layouts" layout category.

Of course you can use your own layouts for other CEWE PHOTOBOOKS.

You can only ever save your own layouts for one page in the CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

Can I set the precise size of a layout frame? [Back]

Yes, you can.

Firstly, the precise size of the layout frame will be displayed as a tooltip when scaling.

Secondly, you can state the precise size (and the position and rotation) of the selected layout frame or multiple layout frames by means of the "Position object (size, position and rotation)" function.

Thirdly, you can assign the same size to all selected layout frames by means of the "Align size of objects" function.

This size is determined by the first selected layout frame.

Finally, you can use a grid for better control of the sizes of the layout frames.

Tip:
If you wish to use the set size of a layout frame for additional photos, select this layout frame and click the "New photo" button in the object toolbar. The newly inserted layout frame has precisely the same size as the previously selected frame.
That makes it very easy for me to display my photos in the same size in the CEWE PHOTOBOOK.
The process can be repeated without limit.

Is it possible to arrange photos in several overlapping layers? [Back]

The layout frames can partly overlap and cover each other.

With the commands "Object one level forward" and "Object one level backward" (as symbols in the toolbar) it is possible to control the order in which the frames overlap each other, in other words which frame is in the foreground and which is in the background of the layout.

Text frames are always in the foreground and can be moved under each other, but never behind a picture.

Why does the layout change when I insert or remove a photo? [Back]

First:

You have switched on the "Automatic layout adjustment" function.

When you insert a new layout frame in a product page, or remove an existing layout frame, the software automatically uses the saved layout which most closely fits the (new) number of photos on the page, in order to achieve the best distribution of layout frames.

If no suitable layout is available, the software tells you in a message window.

You can switch this behaviour on and off by means of the corresponding symbol in the toolbar.

Second:

In the "Behaviour when inserting pictures" program options, you have the option "Change layout framework so that picture optimally fills frame.

That adjusts the layout frame to the page conditions of the photo. The longest side of the photo is scaled optimally into the frame.

If you do not want that to happen, switch on the "Keep frame size and cut out middle of picture" option.

How do I place the same layout on all pages? [Back]

Select the required layout in the layout selection and click the "Place layout on all inside pages" function key immediately below the layout selection.

If you want only empty pages in the photo book, in order to design each page individually, use a layout with no pictures.

Can I delete my own layouts? [Back]

Yes, you can delete your own layouts.

In the layout selection on the left you will find the icon button immediately below the displayed layouts.

"Delete own layout" can be found on the far right of this selection.

Is it possible to reflect layouts? [Back]

No, the supplied layouts cannot be edited.

However, reflected variants of most layouts can usually be found in the preview.

Is it possible to produce and save layouts for a double page? [Back]

Layouts are only ever viewed for a single page of the CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

That means it is not possible to produce and save a double-page layout.

Tip:
Design your own layout for a double page and save it by saving both the left and right pages as your own layouts.
You can then insert these layouts again on other double pages correspondingly on the right and left pages.
It is also possible to place a layout frame across both pages of a double page.
The layout frame will then be saved with the layout of the page on which its centre is located.

How do I copy layouts from one page to another? [Back]

It is possible to duplicate photos, texts or entire layouts to other pages using the "Copy" and "Paste" functions.

You can either use the icon buttons in the tool selection for the editing tools or the key commands Ctrl+c ("c" for Copy) and Ctrl+v ("v" corresponds to an arrow symbol for "Paste" is located conveniently next to "c" on the keyboard).

Select the content to be copied and use one of the two possibilities.

Is it possible to rearrange CEWE PHOTOBOOK pages? [Back]

CEWE PHOTOBOOK pages can only be moved as double pages.

In the scaled-down preview of the CEWE PHOTOBOOK, click the corresponding double page, hold the left mouse button down and move the double page to the desired position.

Both designed and empty double pages can be moved in this way.

How do I insert a CEWE PHOTOBOOK background? [Back]

You will find the backgrounds in the object selection under the "Design" -> "Background" tabs.

In the selection field in the object selection it is possible to limit the selection of backgrounds by theme.

You can insert a background across the entire double page by double-clicking the preview picture in the object selection.

If it to appear only on a right or left page, hold down the left mouse button and drag it to to the corresponding page.

Additional insertion buttons can be found at the bottom of the preview and insertion control in the object selection.

If the background is to appear on all pages, you do not need to repeat the insertion for every page.

Corresponding commands are available through the context menu (right-click the preview picture).

If no background is inserted on the page, the page background remains white.

How can I load and install new backgrounds? [Back]

The software contains a small selection of our CEWE PHOTOBOOK backgrounds, which you can supplement with additional background packages.

The procedure is as follows:

Please note that it is not possible to save the background pictures from the preview on your computer and use them as a background pictures by right-clicking "Save picture as...".
A background picture saved in this way would not have a sufficient resolution for a CEWE PHOTOBOOK and would inevitably produce a poor result.

Why do the software's own backgrounds sometimes appear untidy and "pixelated"? [Back]

These are only preview pictures to be viewed on a screen.

The high-resolution background pictures for printing or output to film are used in production.

When the order is placed, the production site is only given the reference of the high-resolution original picture.

On the basis of this reference a high-resolution data file is extracted and printed in production.

This process avoids large data volumes in the installation of the software and in the placing of the order.

How do I design a background with my own photo?[Back]

In "Preview and insertion control" (below the preview pictures for the photos) you will find the "Photo as background on both pages", "Photo as background on left" and "Photo as background on right" icon buttons.

Using these tools you can place the currently selected picture as a background across the entire double page or the right or left page of your CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

Unlike the supplied backgrounds, the photo inserted as a background can be selected and edited using the photo show.

That means it can be processed later and the colour and brightness can be adjusted, or a picture effect can be applied.

Can I edit backgrounds included in the software? [Back]

Backgrounds included in the software cannot be edited.

Tip:
If you produce and design backgrounds with your own photos,
they can be edited individually.

Can I blur backgrounds? [Back]

That is only possible when using your own photos as a background.

You can edit your photos with "Photo show". In the toolbar at the top left you will find the "Effects" button.

In the effects, the "Soft focus" tool can be found in the standard effects.

You can use the slider controls to fade out the photo to white or by producing blurring.

Confirm the steps by clicking "OK" and the program will now convert the data.

Important: The original data will be preserved.

You can now place this edited photo directly in the CEWE PHOTOBOOK using the "Incorporate changes" function.

Tip:
Test the "Background picture" effect.
That is a special photo effect that adapts your photo for use as a discreet background picture.
The "background picture" effect is actually a "soft focus" with preset values.

Is it possible to place a background on all pages? [Back]

In the "Preview and insertion control" (below the preview pictures for the photos) you will find the "Photo as background on both pages", "Photo as background left" and "Photo as background right" icon buttons.

Using these tools you can place the currently selected picture as a background across the whole current double page or the current right or left page of your CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

You will also find the the "Photo as background on all pages", "Photo as background on all left pages" and "Photo as background on all right pages" icon button.

Using these tools you can place the currently selected picture as a background across all double pages or all right or left pages of your CEWE PHOTOBOOK.

How can I load and install new design models? [Back]

The software includes a small selection of our design models (contents) for custom photobooks and many other photo products, which you can supplement with additional design packages.

The procedure is as follows:

Select the "Design" tab on the left of the product editor. Here you will see the "Download more" button.

Clicking this button opens an Internet page from which you can download additional packages of designs, backgrounds, clipart and passe-partouts.

By clicking on "Content preview" you can see the content of the design package.

By selecting "Install" you can download the entire background package, which will be installed automatically.

The designs can then be invoked in the product editor under "Design" "Contents".

How do I produce a photo collage in the CEWE PHOTOBOOK? [Back]

If you would like to produce a collage which the software will design with your pictures,

select the CEWE PHOTOBOOK page on which you wish to produce the collage.

Now, on the left of the photo selection, select the photos you want to include in the collage.

With the right mouse button, now select the "Selected photos as collage" command.

You can decide whether the collage will be placed on the left or right page of the book or on the double page.

This command produces a collage of the selected photos. The sizes and positions of the photos are adjusted automatically.

You can execute the command several times in succession until you are satisfied with the result.

Note:

To obtain a satisfactory result, in the "Options" under "Editor" you should set the "Behaviour when inserting photos" to "Keep frame size and cut out middle of photo". That will ensure that the collage contains no gaps.

The setting "Change layout frame so that photo optimally fills frame" will result in gaps remaining between the pictures, but that can look attractive.

Or you can limit the layout selection to "Full coverage" and select a layout that you like.

You will then have better control of the result.

Afterwards you can move the photos within their layout frame or swap them by dragging a photo to another layout frame.

What are passe-partouts? [Back]

A passe-partout (also known as a "mask") trims the photo like a template to a predetermined selectable shape. Depending on the chosen template, the edges of the photos may be sharply delimited or run gently into the background.

Examples:

You drag a passe-partout onto the desired photo or the corresponding layout frame in the product editor. The effect is visible immediately

What are passe-partouts used for? [Back]

You can use a passe-partout to give shape to your photos.

Parts of the picture are covered by a template. (They become "transparent".)

It is very simple but effective way of changing the shape of your photos, producing picture collages or allowing photos to merge into one another by means of transitions.

Is it possible to edit passe-partouts? [Back]

Passe-partouts cannot be edited.

Can I load additional passe-partouts? [Back]

You can download additional passe-partouts, clipart, styles and backgrounds from the Internet by clicking the "download more..." button.

They are installed automatically and available immediately.

Which setting possibilities does the help grid offer? [Back]

The CEWE PHOTOBOOK software provides you with a help grid for the precise positioning of your photos.

In the object toolbar, click the the help grid button.

A non-printable help grid then appears to improve the positioning of the layout frames.

The layout frames lock onto the crossing points of the help grid.

The line separations and the locking on the help grid are set in the "Options" of the header under "Editor".

Why do photos go beyond the edge of the page? [Back]

Photos that are too close to the edge of the page (depending on the product, the border will be 2 to 5mm) are automatically pulled slightly over the edge.

That helps avoid so-called "flashes".

A flash is a narrow gap between a photo and the edge of the page.

It looks untidy, so photos should either be kept at a minimum distance from the edge of the page or should project slightly beyond the page.

Such a projection, also known as trim, is removed when the pages are cut during production.

In the "Options" (see "Program options" section) you will find, as in the "Editor" area, the "Position photos automatically if they are too near the edge)?" function.

The following options are available
